Flow Star Tutorial: Buzz Saw

Last updated: May 15, 2026

Intermediate Tutorial • Buzz Saw • Phase 2

The Buzz Saw is a high-energy Flow Star trick that creates a fast blade effect in front of your body. This move is all about keeping both hands connected, folding cleanly, and pulling the star through a smooth wheel.

Before you attempt this high-speed trick, you need to have your Reverse Figure 8 dialed in on both sides. This ensures your wrists have the necessary flexibility for the hand-folding mechanics.

THE SHORT VERSION

How Do You Do the Buzz Saw?

Transition from your reverse figure 8. As the star comes toward you, grab the bottom edge. Bring that edge up toward your face. Your hands never let go of the star.

Buzz Saw Video Tutorial

Keep the star spinning with both hands pulling up and towards you to create the "blade" effect.

What to Watch For

Entry: Transition from your reverse figure 8 and grab the bottom edge as the star comes toward you.

Hand fold: As your leading hand turns, fold your other hand in so the back of your second hand touches the star.

Wheel shape: Mirror the motion with your opposite hand and pull back up toward your face in a continuous wheel.

Blade effect: Speed it up only after the fold feels clean and the wheel stays smooth.

Buzz Saw Steps

01. The Bottom Edge Grab

Transition from your reverse figure 8. As the star comes toward you, grab the bottom edge. Bring that edge up toward your face. Your hands never let go of the star.

02. The Hand Fold

As your leading hand turns, fold your other hand in. The back of your second hand should touch the star. This makes it easier to complete the grip rotation.

03. The Symmetrical Wheel

Mirror the motion with your opposite hand. Pull back up toward your face in a continuous wheel. Speed it up to get that classic blade effect.

Common Buzz Saw Mistakes

Most Buzz Saw issues come from rushing the hand fold, losing pull momentum, or letting go too early. Slow the mechanics down before trying to maximize speed.

Rushing the Fold

Take your time focusing on the mechanics of the fold before trying to maximize speed.

Not Enough Pull

Actively pull the star up and towards you to keep the fabric taut and rotation liquid.

Letting Go Too Early

Most wobbles happen when you let go. Keep both hands on the fabric throughout the entire rotation.

Too Close to Your Face

Use your elbows to guide the plane and ensure the star maintains distance from your face.

One-Song Practice Drill

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Practice the Fold Before Speed

Put on one song and practice the Buzz Saw slowly. Focus on the bottom edge grab, the hand fold, and the symmetrical wheel before trying to make the blade effect fast.

First Minute

Practice the Reverse Figure 8 entry and feel where the bottom edge grab happens.

Second Minute

Slow down the hand fold and keep the back of your second hand touching the star.

Third Minute

Mirror the motion with your opposite hand and pull back up toward your face.

Final Minute

Add speed only if the wheel feels smooth and both hands stay connected.

Buzz Saw FAQ

Why does the star keep folding?

Usually, this is a lack of pull momentum. Actively pull the star up and towards you to keep the fabric taut and rotation liquid.

Is this possible with Mini Stars?

Absolutely. Mini Stars look even faster, but require more precision during the hand fold due to the smaller target area.

What should I learn before the Buzz Saw?

Before you attempt this high-speed trick, you need to have your Reverse Figure 8 dialed in on both sides. This ensures your wrists have the necessary flexibility for the hand-folding mechanics.
